Chet
I would say that it is possible given too thin of material for proper float design.

What about the float in the Marvel carb on my Continental O-200 in my Cessna? Guess I better not fly above 5,000' MSL!

Airplanes have solid brass floats to circumvent that problem.

He didn't ask for it back. Just for kicks I stuck it in my vacuum jar and drew it down to around 27Hg. (which is well below the pressure in Colorado!) It came out but not all the way. It was creased in places from the damage and the creases won't come out.

WOW guys,Let me say one more time ,I was asked why the float was crushed when our customer called to report a problem. After talking with a couple hundred people on the phone that day I said ,spur of the moment, I don't know, but a GUESS is altitude might have been the problem. I did not say altitude WAS the problem. I remembered sometime in my 68 year foggy passed hearing this scenario . All I do know for a fact is, nobody here at Berts Model A Center knows all the answers, We just try to do our best for the customer. Next time it will be easier to just say the post office drove over it with a truck and send a new part . No chance then of being called an ignorant parts guy that's full of shit.I will be behind the counter and on the phone again tomorrow to try to help our customers and I know they will get the best Model A vendor service available .Give it a break and go drive that wonderful Model A of yours. That's what I did today on my day off. Thanks Again , Phil Turner, Berts Model A Center

It's cool Phil... We're just having fun now. I really appreciate you taking care of me! The next time I have a float I don't want I will pressurize it and see what it takes to collapse it. My carb runs a lot better. Whoever rebuilt it last used a stack of washers close to 3/16" under the valve to get the bowl level right. Since the old float had about two tablespoons of gas in it it was extra heavy. I flooded out at almost every stop. Now with the new float I have one .030 washer under the valve. Sad thing is that I need a new carb top because the seat is drilled off center to the threads of the idle adjust screw. This causes the screw to bend and bind and be a pita to adjust correctly. But a new (old) carb is on the way! No drives tomorrow... rain is forecast.

I would think this discussion has completed the subject and ought to come to an end.

Thanks Phil and Steve for being there serving the A industry with some of the best service and parts in the business!
