This is the story my mom told me (100% Polish). It appears to be Middle European (German, Polish, Czek, Yugo, etc.), obviously not Jewish or Muslim.

Pigs are fat, chickens scratch in the ground. Eat pork and saurkraut and be fat and rich all year. Eat chicken and you'll scratch to get by.

This is about the only old wives tale or superstition I follow. It has worked for me

Kraut & Pork is primarily a Pennsylvania thing from the PA Dutch folks - Thank God they got the spread minimized
