I would imagine that diesel or barbeque lighter would work about the same as paint thinner or mineral spirits. As long as you do it outside without anything flammable close by you should be fairly safe.

Or in the alternative, load the valley up with charcoal and let 'er got for a few hours. Once it get's going, cover it with a piece of metal.

Make sure you use "Kingsford" charcoal.
