Hi, I like your coupe. The prefix before the frame number will tell you what year the frame is at the very least. 699A is 46, 799A is 47 and 899A is 48. Having said that there is no telling what may have been done to the car over the last 80 years. It's common to replace a frame which has been hacked up by a Hot Rodder. Nothing against Rods but to get back to original might require a frame change. Mark

Wish I had seen this picture first. You have a 1947 frame for sure. I have a 1947 Mercury convertible which is a carbon copy of a 1946. Rusty Davis, the 42-48 Mercury advisor in the Early Ford V8 Club has written on this subject and states that Ford, Mercury and Lincoln retitled 1946 models as 1947's early in their respective runs. Remember, Ford Motor Company was, and still is, in the business of making and selling vehicles that people will buy. Ford Motor Company was not in the business of making concourse correct cars. Immediately post WW2 a car company could sell anything made regardless of the exact combination of parts. Your car has features that match the known assembly practices in early 1947. Ford did not have a specific model year change over from 1946 to 1947, or from 1947 to 1948. The various publications referenced in this thread go into this in much more detail.

Thanks all. I am going to apply Occam's Razor and assume it is a very early 47 as it is the simplest answer. Will see how the MD MVA views it next week. Onward!

Occam's razor is a philosophical principle that suggests when faced with competing explanations for the same phenomenon, the simplest one, which makes the fewest assumptions, is usually the best. It is often summarized as "entities should not be multiplied beyond necessity."
conceptually.orgshould not be multiplied beyond necessity.
