Brianpfreeman,

If I understand your question correctly, with the engine still in the car and before you pull the pan, use one of these little critters or something homemade like it to hold the oil pump in the block. All that's needed is just enough tension on the screw to hold the pump in place - doesn't need to be screaming tight:

This little tool will hold the oil pump in place while you wrestle the pan down and out for cleaning and inspection. Having the pump held securely in place really helps when you're ready to reverse the process. Hope that answers your question.

Hello from Germany, the pipe thread from the side of my block ist damaged, I can't get it out.
Is this the way you hold the oil pump in place without the tool? And while the paper holds the pump, you put the oil pan back in place? I can't believe that the paper stays in the engine?
Is it possible to put the pump and then the pan back together without locking the pump through the hole?
Thanks, Conrad

Tie the pump up in place with some soft wire or cord, looped around a manifold stud or other convenient place, with the oil pan up in place but still loose, remove the wire or cord.
Simples.

Yes, the paper is just a tiny piece (size of little fingernail) as a wedge shim and it keeps the oil pump up until the pan is back in place. It is held in place until you remove the pump again.
