Just to add to Richard’s post, Per-Lux bought the Ignitor line and expanded it from stationary engines, fork lifts and refrigeration units to automotive. Ryder Ford rental trucks had the igniters installed at the factory as did UPS in town delivery vehicles. Mickey Remund was Mickey Thomason’s engine builder before he retired and worked with Per-Lux to develope units for the Model A and early Ford V-8’s. I personally have used the Petronix’s boats, Model A’s and collector cars for more than 40 years with one failure that was self inflicted due to a bad ground. Quite frankly, the Petronix has been on the market for about 50 years and if it was as bad as some posters seem to say, they would have been out of business a long time ago.

I have 4 Model As. (I think the cars and the lawn mower get together at night and I end up with more cars). I have electronic ignition on two and points on two. Both are VERY reliable but when we go outback, I use a distributor with points. There is no getting a new sensor for and electronic one out there but I can do anything with a set of points on the side of the road. Having both, I have a foot in each camp. To each his own, I say - just drive them while we can.

Second, the QC of O.E.M. electronic ignition systems is much, MUCH superior to what you will find in those off-shore manufactured aftermarket electronic retrofit systems of today. I can share with you many instances of failed Pertronix systems in Model-As that I actually warrantied the modules for unit that just quit, -so yes, they can be problematic. Making the comparison of a retrofit vs. a modern O.E. system is not really the same. Probably like saying a McDonalds Restaurant hamburger is just as good a NY Strip steak because they are both made out of a cow. ![]() |

IF you go the module way get a spare in case there's trouble with the installed one.
