Pinesdune - this is what got me thinking about it. Hope the link works. I bent the sensor to fit in the radiator, but working on a smaller version. Also see the need for the infrared version.

The link works, thanks. Lots of applications for this kind of sensor set up, coolant/oil/exhaust temps , permanent or "diagnostic" mounting , motorcycle, car, ag, the list goes on. Have fun with the project!

A little hijacking here! I have just now returned from a drive of about 50 miles and I noticed the temp go from about 140-150 (normal for that car - no T/stat) to 200 for a short time, then drop very quickly back to where it was. This has me puzzled.
Have any of you seen this or can explain it?

Full disclosure. I have been known to glance down at my speedometer on occasion...even my fuel gauge and ammeter.

Did you move the spark lever?

I can't think of any other thing to make this happen other than a bad head gasket or crack letting combustion into the coolant.

If you have a T-stat, maybe it stuck close for a bit?

Some road debris blocked the radiator?

My engine "hunts" for the set temperature when the T-Stat first opens but since you don't have a thermostat I doubt that's your problem.

Thanks Bill, I didn't touch the timing lever. The motor is a diamond B block so being ANY kind of B motor, a crack is on the cards but I doubt it. Next time I'm out, I will open the rad cap, check for bubbles and smell.

My temperature experience mirrors BarkleyDave's with a 160 stat but a new Brassworks performance radiator and not so much hilly.
