Re: Muffler heat shield??????
I made a heat shield from ductwork from Lowes, muffler clamps, and misc. hardware. I cut away two spots for the brake linkage and the bell housing. The ideas above sound good, too. See photos:

Re: Muffler heat shield??????
We would use a rosebud torch tip to cut steel out of aluminum and the steel would melt first between the two metals. Aluminum transfer heat, steel holds the heat and then melts. I worded in a aluminum extrusion plant trust me I know.

Re: Muffler heat shield??????
The idea of a heat shield is great, but don't put in anything that will be a pain every time you have to pull out the floor boards. And don't leave any sharp corners. When there is trouble on the road, the last thing you need is having to deal with a heat shield that is in the way.

Re: Muffler heat shield??????
I was scared off of buying the cheap heat shield, and I spent the big bucks for the Kool-Feet and am glad I did.
Also, I just did as H.L. urged and googled "radiant barrier insulation" and am also glad that I did that. Lots of interesting stuff. The allegation is that it doesn't matter which side of the reflective barrier has the air space; it will work EITHER by reflecting the heat back toward the source OR by refusing to re-radiate the absorbed energy out on the other side. Having taught thermodynamics for a career, I find much to ponder here, but, am aware that, despite the "dynamics" in the title, the subject is really about differences in equilibrium states--not about underlying mechanisms or rates of change. |
