It's amazing how many A's out there for sale have NO shocks. With good working springs they will bounce all over the place. One of the many reasons I bought my tudor is that it had four working shocks on it. FWIW

Last 2 years without shocks at all I had removed originals . Drives bouncy
And seems to bottom out at rear when hitting a good bump. Still find it drives straight on rough roads. Originals are shot, most Likly will do tube shocks over the winter months., Since most advise to do so for a more stable ride. Fredski |

Yes I think some of the descriptions here would indicate other issues as well as shocks. As with Fred my car also bottoms in the rear if I hit a speed bump a bit fast and is a bit bouncy but it drives straight.I am fitting shocks and in no way recommending not running them but if your car is reacting that bad maybe adding shocks won't fix it totally.

So, if you only had one pair of shocks, where would you put them - on the back?

I had a great setup on the 30 roadster I sold recently, had rebuilt originals on the front and half of a Snyders modern shock kit on the rear which was airplane tube type with the mounting hardware, did a good job of keeping that rear end in place and giving a good ride.

I drove many years w/o shocks. I purchased A set of Speedway Friction shocks from a barner here. Put them on and did some dialing in and the difference is night and day. Shocks are good.

After reading these threads I checked my project . Nice paint job and new dog bones in the front and links on the rear . None of them work they move a little something else on my long winters list .

When I got mine 40 years ago the shocks didn't work, frozen. It rode a bit harsh for some strange reason [ smiley face].
I can't imagine having no shocks, or, tube shocks. But, thats just me. |

Here's an old thread about the necessity of shocks for safe and proper operation of the Model A:

Old Henry wouldn't have wasted his time with them if they weren't necessary. Much safer to drive with working shocks.
