That's the screen around the oil pump intake.

Why did someone undercoat it?

You might also want to study up on the 2011 EPA regulations to reduce benzene in gasoline. There is now a limit of 0.62% benzene in gasoline. Before there were any regulations benzene content in gasoline was as high as 5%. The refinery I retired from as a Chemical Engineer had to install 2 new distillation towers to reduce the benzene precursors(cyclohexane) in their naphtha. Naphtha is processed to higher octane gasoline in platinum reformers which make benzene and other aromatics like toluene and xylene. MTBE has not been in gasoline for many years.

Nice, I was once a RF Electrical Engineer with American Manufacturer of two-way Radio and Microwave data links, but caught the software bug and deal with UNIX/Linux systems. I recall back in my old under grad days the ChemE students dealing with all those distillation column equations --too hard for us EEs..

Good day.

Wait a minute.... Are you sure about that? It looks more like a swarm of Minnesota mosquitos to me.
By the way, I learned all I know about chemistry in the 1960's Popular Science. I bet you couldn't tell that.
Hey, just trying to clear things up and keep grounded....

In New Zealand at least, I have only seen petrol called "benzine" with an "i" as distinguished from benzene the aromatic solvent. This spelling appears in old petrol ads, and many model A owners in their late eighties still call it benzine here.
