That should work.
You're sure it is not a 2.5amp!

Hmmm - if the coil is shorted internally, couldn't one detect this by disconnecting wires from both + and - terminals and testing across the two terminals with an ohmmeter? If the coil is shorted, wouldn't the meter read 0?

If one is blowing a lot of fuses, he could avoid that by wiring a 6 or 12 volt lamp where the fuse goes. If you have a short, the lamp will light. Saves money.

Yes this is true but there can be misleading conditions present.
For discussion purposes lets say Relvis has two coils wired in parallel. If one coil is shorted the bulb will shine brightly or full brilliance. If the shorted coil is removed from the circuit the light will still be ON but at a reduced brightness.
The brightness would be determined by the resistance of the remaining coil.

Yes this is a good tool to use when searching for a short but you have to be aware that there could be a parallel resistance in the circuit.

You have to have a shorted coil or the wiring is not like the drawing.

Problem Solved!

If the wires are hooked up wrong, one can't expect it to work right.

The Bratton's Schematic did the trick.

THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!

Great news. What wires were wrong?

I had the junction box wired to the coil. I'll never jump in to such a project without proper documentation again.

Thanks for all of your help!

There should be one wire from the coil to the junction box.
