If your new to the Model A world, make sure you understand how to use the spark advance lever. Fully UP for starting, DOWN for running. The Down position takes some adjustment to depending on where the previous owner set the timing and where your individual engine like to run. For cruising, mine likes to be 2 clicks from the bottom. GAV valve is the carb adjustment on the choke lever, mine likes to be 1/4 turn on until warmed up, then nearly off for highway. Around town open it up to nearly 1/4. To facilitate easier/smoother shifting, make sure you keep the engine idle speed low, then shift early and slow. Meaning don't rev the car AT ALL, shift before you think you should and also shift out of gear, wait a couple seconds, then slide it into the next gear. You maybe know all this, just trying to help in case you aren't aware...

When the motor was rebuilt, they added a modern ignition system. Are these adjustment still accurate?

Yes, unless they added an automatic advance. When you move the left steering column lever, does the rod attached to the distributer move? If so, then make sure you lift for starting, drop for running. The reason for it is it will kick back when starting and break your starter drive.

I would strongly suggest that before you drive your car you buy and read a copy of the owners manual.

They are sold by the Model A parts companies and , while not many pages, contain needed info.

Read what Ford said regarding the operation of your car.

If it says "Gasoline" on the pump - Run it.
If it says "Oil" on the can - Run it.

You aren't running a 1000hp v8 here at 12:1 compression. You are running a 40hp flathead 4 at 4:1 compression.

Best of luck to you.

ha ha thanks.....

years ago I blew up both of my snowmobiles on a family vacation because I didn't ask questions. I would hate to look back on a blown up dream car and have my wife say....see? I told you that you should have asked someone.

I read somewhere that in a pinch, you can actually run kerosene or diesel in these engines also. I wouldn't want to try it though.

Clem is correct. Sport Coups with white walls are Chick Magnets.
Detergent oil and 87 Octane.

I too like white walls. Have them on my 29 std coupe and I know that is a no-no but------ who cares. If you like them, keep them. But you will find you need to get some cleaner and clean them more that you might clean black.

Nice looking car and looks like you have a good helper. Have fun!

The thing about whitewalls is if you did trade your new factory tires at the dealer, the whitewalls of the day were double sided. Of interesting note is the appearance of the double sided whitewalls in many of Ford's original advertising art for the Model A's.

I like white walls, even the single sided ones, as I'm not out to impress anyone I run over. For the 'must be blackwall' purists, you can point out that NO Model A's came from the factory with a spare tire! Only a spare steel wheel. You had to buy the tire, tube, and valve stem hardware as an accessory from the dealer. So much for 'as it came from the factory'.
