Would they accept a former registration or inspection documents from a previous owner as proof of VIN?

They will not divert from the rules whatsoever. It doesn't make any difference to them whether I register the car or not. As I said earlier, I'll start calling other Model A guys in KY if I can't register it tomorrow. One of them may have a friend or relative in the sheriff's department who can sign off on it for me. I'll let you guys know what happens. Thanks for your interest and comments....

IMO, that would be inaccurate information, in most cases, in todays model a ownership, i.e.- engines seldom same as when built.

Changing the engine out does not make the information inaccurate.

If I say look at a certain page in a book for a quote and some someone has ripped out that page in your book does that make the information I gave inaccurate?

The picture is an accurate representation of where the serial number should be on a model A made in the US.

Then the inspector says they do not accept those numbers, and force the issue to find the real numbers. The real numbers may not be the same at what is on your paperwork. Then you could have more problems. If you are cooperative and honest, the DMV should recognize that and be willing to work with you. I would go with the flow, do as the DMV asks, and play the game as they want to. I live in North Carolina. Every out of state antique car or lost title car is inspected by the Highway Patrol DMV inspectors. I try to only buy cars that already have a NC title, and I check to make sure the numbers match. I bought my 1930 Coupe in December. It came with a NC title and the numbers matched the engine block numbers. It was very easy for me to title and register, no inspection needed. In 2007 I bought a 1924 Model T without a title. NC has since become tighter on lost titles. The inspector came to my house and laid under the car, trying to find a frame number. They settled for the engine block number. I found out later that 1924 cars did not necessarily have a number stamped on the frame. I got my title and then built a custom rolling chassis for the car, with a modern four cylinder. I bought two reproduction brass body tags from Snyder's. I had the numbers engraved on them. I put one on the firewall and one inside the driver's door jamb. Good luck.
Mike
Exactly right! Don't restamp anything in NC. Follow the DMV laws if you expect to ever get a proper title.

If it is like here in CO, when a car comes from out of state, or has not been previously registered, a VIN verification is required. Here the inspector has to have the documents in hand, and then compares the number on the document with the physical number.

I am glad I have a tag on the firewall from Murray that has a VIN number, otherwise the same headache would occur

Although it may not apply here, I believe all but a couple of states don’t allow registration of vehicles that don’t have either a title and or a previous registration. This is where I think the hobby dropped the ball as many antique autos without one of those documents are prevented from being registered and ultimately become parts vehicles. Certainly detrimental to the hobby.

I think what he probably meant to say was that the information would not match up if the engine was changed out at some point.

I guess I am pretty lucky in NH. All that we require is a Bill of Sale with the VIN on it. Titles are not issued except upon request. Model A's don't require a State Inspection.

And this is why i proved a link to the page rather than just the photo. take a look at the page before you criticize the content as being inaccurate.

http://jmodela.coffeecup.com/numbers.html

Also he asked 'where is the number found' not will the numbers match.

THANK GOD FOR BLONDES!!! I got my plates at the other office this morning. When I went in there's normally a middle-aged no-nonsense black woman in there but today there was a blonde in her twenties which gave me a good feeling if you know what I mean (you can take that a couple of different ways). She came out and looked at the NY state inspection sticker in the corner of the windshield which had the serial number on it and I think she thought it was similar to a VIN on the dash of a newer car. She compared the number to the one on the NY registration (there are no titles in NY on cars older than 1972) and asked if the number was anywhere else on the car. I said it's under the hood and opened it and showed her the number on the engine and she said that's fine and signed off on it. Then I went back in and paid $78.50 for the antique plates which never expire and I was on my way. How cool is that? Last night my favorite college basketball team won the national championship and today I got my plates so it was a great 12 hours. Thanks to all who offered advice and encouragement....

Good save...if you have 2,000 bureaucrats, you only need one of them to say "yes' sometimes...

"Someone suggested in another thread that the body has to be removed from the frame so please don't suggest that because I'll sell it before I do that."

What price will you be asking ?
