Default Re: Are file fit rings available for 59A +.080

I have the idea that the sleeved blocks may have been to reduce rebuild costs and time for Big trucks and military vehicles during the war. I have read that the factory relieved blocks for commercial applications also. Don't know if that's true or if it was due to the poor quality fuel completely.
I've been sick with a sinus infection for a couple of weeks, so this week I'll be back at it. Thanks to everyone for your input. I have my refaced lifters back next week and then I'll have all the parts to reassemble the engine.

Joel:

I have seen both relieved and non-relieved tin can sleeved blocks in my travels, so that is accurate. I've been told it was to help reduce valve seat cracks on large trucks when they were run hard.

My first engine about 70 years ago was a 41 merc with tin can sleeves, I pulled the sleeves and ordered .0825 pistons and then found a crack in the block. I got a 59L and bored it .0825 and used the pistons in it, Nice engine.

Yes the tin can sleeves were used in both 3 & 1/16 and 3 & 3/16 engines.

The tin can sleeves for 3 3/16" bore engines were also used in the 9N, 2N and 8N four cylinder Ford tractors and are identical the V8 sleeves and pistons. When worked hard in dusty fields these engines wore out quickly and got new sleeves and pistons every few years. They may still be available new at New Holland Implement dealers (they bought out the Ford tractor line). NAPA also may still carry the .0825" oversize pistons and rings.
