Post Side Bowl Install

Update!!!!
I acquired a side bowl for my Zenith carb for my indented firewall 31 coupe. It is clear that the large washer goes on the outside of the plug that connects to the zenith but does the smaller washer go on the inside of the bowl or between the connection and the zenith. Any pictures would be great.
Update!!!

Here are a few pictures of the install. While the correct carb for this model year is a Zenith 3 I only own a Zenith 1. This side bowl install on a Zenith 1 was accomplished with just a slight modification as you can see from the pics. Thanks to all that responded.

Bolt holds the sediment bowl to the carb.
A washer goes on each side of the sediment bowl.
One under the head of the bolt and one between the bowl and the carb.

Yes, there is a gasket at both ends of the mounting bolt.

Good idea to use a gasoline resistant coating on these gaskets; such as Permatex Avation Gasket Cement.

So the smaller gasket goes outside of the bowl not inside.

Correct, the small goasket goes between the cast sediment bowl and the carb bowl.

Tom Endy just wrote a great article about sidebowl for the Victoria Bustle. Tells you all the problems, fixes, and how to assemble them so they do not leak. Mayeb he will chime in here.

The article is posted on a web site. Go to www.ocmafc.org. On the left menu click on "tech articles", it will pull up another menu. Click on "Tom Endy's articles". Scroll to the bottom, the article is "Zenith side bowl".

Tom,
Thanks for the reply your answer was just what I needed. I had to make sure the sediment bowl surface wasn't as flat as I needed. As you can see with just a small modification from Ace Hardware I was able to extend the connection from the Zenith 1 so I could install the sidebowl.

The reason you are having a problem is that is NOT the correct top for a side bowl to be installed on...

As I said in the update I own a Zenith 1 not a Zenith 3. When I find the correct carb I will be in better shape.

Fred is certainly correct. The upper casting you have is from a standard Zenith. Look at the photo in my article, it shows the inlet boss located closer to the throat. A side bowl upper casting also does not have a separate filter assembly on the end. A side bowl can also be a Zenith 1 or a Zenith 2.

Until I can find the correct carb this was my attempt at working thru a problem. Until I can find the correct upper casting or a complete Zenith 3 this is a better solution than I had. By the way good work on the tech articles. Great source of info for all of us trying to get our hands around this car.

Holley and Zenith also built side bowl carburetors. The Holley top has no markings on the front; the Zenith has a "Z" on the front. Ford also built a side bowl top and the bottom bowl is marked "Zenith 3 "; this same bottom was used on the earlier Ford carb. top with the gas connection like all the earlier carburetors.

Ron

I'll have some rebuilt side bowl carburetors for sale at the Turlock Swap Meet on January 28th and 29th, 2011. These are complete including the side bowl.

Mr. Tin Cup:

You are going to have a very difficult time finding a Zenith-3. There were very few of them made. Zenith made the Zenith-1, Holly made the Zenith-2, and Ford made the Zenith-3. I have never seen a Zenith-3, I am told they are very rare and that the castings are somewhat thin. If you do find one be prepared to pay a lot of money for it.

However, You should be able to find a side bowl top casting from either a Zenith 1 or 2. They are still around and not overly expensive. Either one will fit onto the bottom casting you already have.

Tom,

Quite some time before Al Lepore passed away I rebuilt a couple of side bowl carburetors for him. One had a "Zenith 3 " bottom but a Zenith top; Al said he was never able to come up with the Zenith 3 top; the other was a Holley side bowl. Both carbs had original side bowls.

A perfect example of why this board is so important. I now have a new adventure to find the correct side bowl top or a rebuilt unit. Thanks Tom and Ron.

Ron sorry I won't be in Turlock this weekend to take a look at your sidebowls. It's a little too far to drive from OKC. Do you happen to know Chris Barth? He owns the Golf USA store in Turlock.
