You can get more done on your cars while re-modeling than I do with nothing else on my plate.

Re: My new 1939 Sedan Delivery!
You are overcomplicating your life. Note the following two incontrovertible facts:
1. You cannot drive your house. 2. You can indeed live in a delivery car. Case closed. I do have a '39 Merc engine here...with a drop of paint on the "99" stamp it would be entirely indistinguishable from a 1939 85. |

Re: My new 1939 Sedan Delivery!
Finally a little update and some questions...
I have been sidetracked with many other things... and this poor '39 has been tucked in a corner... A few days ago I rolled it out into the middle of the garage and started making some lists of parts I need and getting an idea of what REALLY needs fixed in order to get it on the road... Mainly the drivers door is needing a good bit of repair... It had a rats nest in it and I guess that's what ate it from the inside out... Luckily it only needs a little bit of repair to the inner structure and probably about 7 or 8 inches of the outside skin Need to find some 19 gauge sheet to repair this... shouldn't be a huge undertaking, hopefully! I tried to fit up the front splash panel that I bought, which was missing... seems its about an inch too short? Is this possibly for another year or a deluxe? I can make it fit, no problem... just wondering I bought a running 59AB from a friend of mine a while back... Started fiddling with it to change some things to make it fit in the '39... going to use it for the time being. The old motor is on the stand above... Trying to figure out what these extra wires are for? They were like this when I bought it... taped off... I don't see them in the wiring diagram? Maybe I am just missing it? This is the heater that was in there... seems like a nice instalation... would this be just a random dealer installed unit? Still hunting another taillight stand... for the other side... I bolted some fog lights on the front to see how they look... these say Studebaker on the lense... the age and wear seems to match the rest of this '39... had to remove the front license mount to attach them even on both sides.... I figure they will be good for turn signals as I'm planning to drive this quite a bit when it gets roadworthy.... So thats about it for now... not going to be a fast process as funds are tight... but I would love to have this roadworthy for Hershey in the fall... we'll see!

Re: My new 1939 Sedan Delivery!
Didn't really have any time to work last night...
tried to figure out the door sheet metal thickness... seems right around .040-.042 Guess I'll have to get some 19 gauge to get something close.... shame I have 18 and 20 sitting around! More interesting though...started trying to figure when this was built The number from the transmission 5038238 looks like its between April 3rd and 28th The list of running changes then seems to place it between May 17th and 26th It has the newer type shocks on the back... but still has a slotted screw holding the door lock in as opposed to the hex...

Re: My new 1939 Sedan Delivery!
I think your dates line up nicely...the serial number date is when the engine was made at the rouge. Engines then were shipped off to the 20 or so assembly plants, and there installed in chassis.
I've never worried much about it, but sometimes instrument cluster and window glass are sources of dates more related to the whole car. Exact timing was also affected by engines being stuffed into storage at each place and taken out probably in order of proximity to the door. That 59 work?? |

Re: My new 1939 Sedan Delivery!
I was glad all the dates made somewhat legitimate sense also...
The window glass is from '38... that's what I checked first... Maybe something to do with the Sedan Deliveries being basically the same body from '38? The 59AB turns over nice... haven't tried to fire it yet... Thinking I should probably fix the brakes and wiring before I drop it in... Any thoughts on those extra wires, Bruce?

Re: My new 1939 Sedan Delivery!
None without some heavy research...but the parts manual drawings give some idea of basic routings of the bundles.
Where is your HL switch currently?? I think you have a car that had main swithc below steering but dimmer on floor. Might relate to that or to a modernized switch or maybe alien attack. |

Re: My new 1939 Sedan Delivery!
headlight switch is on the wheel and the dimmer on the floor... both are wired correctly and work as they should and also match the diagram in the little '39 booklet that has a ghost car drawing... which the drawing has no extra wires that I can see where these are located....
Horns had the correct wiring also, down below Debating whether this wiring should be replaced or not... it does indeed work for the most part... and looks nice most places sealed into the car with layers and layers of solidified dirt and grime...

Re: My new 1939 Sedan Delivery!
Is there three screw holes on the firewall where there should be a voltage regulator?
