Default Fire extinguishers.......what's hot and what's not

Good read in the current Restorer. I'm overdue for an upgrade and wondering what most others are doing. Thanks!

I am just carrying a smaller A-B-C extinguisher-no real room for something bigger and if I needed something bigger, I'd be in trouble anyway.

I prefer Halon rather than Dry Chemical. If you unlucky enough that have to us it, there is no mess left to deal with. But the important thing is.....Carry a fire extinguisher in your car !

Boy is that right! had to use my Halon once on my A. worked GREAT with NO MESS.
had to use a dry chem twice in the last week (non A related) --what a mess to clean up. good place to carry one is on the rear bumper bracket...it is visible to all and easy to get to even if loaded with luggage on tour.

Isn't Halon no longer available? I heard that carbon dioxide extinguishers are good for Class B and C fires such as automobiles and they don't leave any residue.

I keep a Halon in front of the seat riser, and have a 30lb, and a 5 lb Co2 in the garage by the lift, and have a dry chemical by every light switch ( it's always easy to remember where the light switches are) --the 5 lb Co2 is for the times you just need a squirt --and for a quick cold soak when looking for something intermittant, the dry chemical is for last resort.

Another place I keep dry chemical is at the far end of places that only have 1 exit.

I just bought a Kidde 5 lb Halotron (replaces Halon) for $190 from West Marine (westmarine.com). It lays on the rear shelf of my 30 coupe.

Halon is pricy, but still available. You can buy it in Chocolate field at Hershey at the fall meet, or go to www.halonmarketing.com. I keep one in each of my cars. No chemical for me.

Our ABC extinguisher is mounted in a holder on the firewall to the right of the passenger on the roadster. I'm actually carrying it in case someone else's 'A' is set a fire.
I had thought that Halon was illegal. At least the 1000 foot long ore carrier's can not continue to sail with Halon bottles anymore. An EPA Ozone thing.

I hope that fire extinguisher on the package shelf is secured. Otherwise you have a deadly projectile sitting behind your head should you have an accident.
