You've got to hold the nozzle up (nearly) out of the tank. If you're in a state with the vapor recovery nozzles you need to hold that up too. Someone does make a neck extender that will help you fuel with the vapor nozzle.

You could remove the flame arrestor screen.

I rest the gas nozzle in the neck as high as it can sit and set the gas nozzle at the lowest notch. Flame arrestor screen taken out too. Pump always clicks off right about at the full mark on the gas gauge.

I have a flame arrestor screen and just hold the nozzle toward the top. I don't think it is advisable to remove the screen!

I use one of these bad boys. Works great holding nozzle in tank, shuts off when full. Also grounds nozzle to tank to prevent static.

Get a 1-1/4 " male PVC pipe connector with about a 3" piece of pipe in it. that will hold the nozzle up high enough to keep it from shutting off

"The Restorer" published a Tiny Tips on this problem a couple of years ago.

I fashioned the device shown the attached photos from two regulation hockey pucks.

The device is thick enough to push back the nozzle shroud to engage the sensor in the pump handle while allowing the nozzle to maintain ground connection with the gas tank.

An additional benefit - no dripping on the paint.

Grounding the nozzle to the tank is an important point which I don't think many people are aware of.

I hold the nozzle high and at an angle and try to get a visual how close the fuel is to the filler neck and stop before it overflows ........ not fool-proof but 99.99999%

As Ruth said grounding the fuel nozzle to the tank neck is very very important!!!! Why you ask, sparks could jump from the fuel nozzle to the tank neck, just like a spark plug in the engine! And we know was happens in the engine when everything is right kaboom !!!!
I was taught this as a teenager refueling airplanes , ground the fuel nozzle to the tank neck.

Did you know that most car refueling fires in modern times are started by females ! It’s thought that females clothing has something to do that they create more static electricity

Absolutely correct regarding the importance of fuel tank ground connections - regardless of the type of vehicle.

You can buy the original design(neck extension) direct from Andrew Jackman. He advertises in the MAFCA magazine. I agree it is a great product. He is retiring and selling out his inventory.

That is one advantage of being 6'6" with a Model A Ford, you are tall enough to just lean over the tank and look down the neck as you fill the car!

But that is about the ONLY advantage, on a car designed for people who were on average 5'4" or 5'6" back then

Here in California we have Stage 2 vapor recovery systems on the nozzles in most urban areas. My filling the tank is a two-handed affair, and I keep a pair of gloves in the trunk to help.

1. Insert nozzle in tank so that the nozzle just catches under the far lip and rests against the near lip. Keep contact to assure grounding.

2. Pull the vapor recovery sleeve back a couple of inches with one hand. You need to keep pulling it back or the spring will allow it to close. Yes, this breaks the seal and negates the usefulness of the vapor recovery, but that's life.

3. With the other hand, pull the pump handle. It won't engage if the vapor recovery sleeve isn't pulled back far enough.

4. Listen to the fuel going in, and when it sounds like it's full, it probably is. With the nozzle inside the tank wedged against the far lip the vapor recovery system will click it off when about 1/2" below the neck.

When I'm filling from the left (my preference), generally my left hand is on the vapor recovery sleeve and right hand is on the pump handle. Opposite side filling, hands are reversed.

BTW, if you are tempted to push the nozzle down into the tank to open up the vapor recovery, tread carefully. The bail for the gas gauge is down there and you can snap it off with the nozzle. Don't ask how I know that - painful mistake with a steep learning curve.

No matter how you fuel your car. Don’t remove the arrester screen.

It is there for a very good reason. Please don’t remove it.

Angry Re: Gas Station

I have a piece of cutting board with a U cut in it that slips over the notch on the pump nozzle. The vapor recovery switch rests against it, so it’s in the energized position. Frees up one hand. The problem is, I kept loosing them, by leaving them on the nozzle. I now have a drilled hole with a piece of furnace chain attached to help remind me to take it with me.

I just lean forward as far as I can and hold the nozzle up so I can see it filling. I would never take my hand off of the nozzle.
