Default Transmission Question

I've got to move my grandfather's Model T and need to push/pull it some as it does not run at this time.

What configuration of pedals and handle do I need to manipulate to get it to free wheel?

John

The lever needs to be in the vertical position.

If it has been sitting for a while, the clutch disks might be sticking so the high speed may not disengage. You might have to jack the rear up and use those car dollies to move it. Even if they do disengage, Model T really don't have free wheeling, there is usually some drag in the clutch disks so may be hard to roll.

Pull the emergency brake lever back to where you feel it ride over the clutch release ramp. Stop there, no further and that will put it in neutral as much as possible.

In some of my repair books it gives instructions to adjust for a "free" neutral. Congeled oil on the transmission discs and overtightened bands thwart true ease in rolling the car and also causes creep when the cars are started cold.

Be aware you cannot tow a T any distance with the Ford trans in "neutral". Very short distances are ok, but do not tow it on a highway or any long distance. IF the TT has an aux transmission and that is in neutral you can tow it with no issues.

Thank you all for the help. This should be my last time to move the car and sometime next year when all the dust of life settles, I hope to have it running. I'm glad that I have held on to the "Depot-Hack" as I helped Grandpa scavenge parts for the "T" when I was a teenager. Lots of good memories.
