Modifying an oil pickup tube for an early oil pan. I put a straight edge across the pan and measured to the bottom. I made a little go/no go gauge (if you will) and here is where I marked the oil pickup. Before I TIG it, any concerns or adjustments any can see I should make???? I have the bail holding the screen on the pick up just about touching the bottom of the pan?

Looks about right to me . . . I like the screen to be about 3/16 to 1/4" off the bottom of the pan.

Looks good to me. I do it the other way around. I made a piece of plate that represents the bit of block where the oil pump fits and bolt it and the pump to the oil pan. Then you can also check baffle clearances etc.

Don’t shoot me just yet but I put Chevy pickup on if I’m modifying one. Much nicer traps oil better actual pickup tube is now down closer to bottom. 1/4” clearance is my number. Midget racers used them.

Just a hunch but if it were me I would take all the paint off it. If that paint breaks up or goes soft it will end up in the lubrication system.
