Default Dixie upholstery

Has anyone used a Dixie upholstery kit offered by Smith& Jones antique auto parts?

I looked up the Dixie upholstery name to see what's out there and a company up in Canada is the only one that addvertizes model A kits. S&J were like others having a Cartouche distributorship so this may be the late alternative since Cartouche is gone now. I don't know much about the Dixie upholstery kit line except that they separate some kits into interior and top classifications instead of an entire kit for a whole car.

I have recently purchased and installed an interior kit in my 1928 model a tudor from Upholsteries By Dixie located in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. Gene sent detailed installation instructions and every piece fit perfectly. He asked for certain measurements in the interior because, during production, the position of the welding fixtures varied. I am very pleased with their advice and products.

Well I’d thought Dixie Upholstery would be in AL or SC or the like!
Go figure

Yes Dixie has been around for decades in Kitchener Ontario.

Is Cartouche gone ? Isn't it part of the Excler group or Mac's Antique Auto now? I was speaking to them earlier this Fall.

I just recently completed my early 28 Canadian Tudor complete with original bedford cord and coachlace trim. I bought all my material from SMS Auto Fabrics in Oregon and had my panels and headliner sewen locally.I then installed everything myself trimmimg to fit . Lot's of research doing an early A but thanks to a few people on this site I managed to battle through.

Thank you for the link.
I recently (Oct) did a full interior on my '57 Chevy and have been looking to do my '31 town sedan.
The Dixie interior kit is priced right, now to contact my interior man to see what he will charge to install it as I'm not very good at that type of work.

Thank you.I actually got to wondering about it,because LB used to say figure on 3 months for your order.I live near them, and would always walk in to order and pick up.They would always tell me three months, but I don't believe I ever waited more than a month.Their bottleneck time used to be this time of the year.Guys would want to get their interior work done through the winter, and would think about it when it got cold.2024 is really a bit out there. It is what it is,either have to accept it and deal with it,or move on.I once bought a Daimler SP250 because the owner was told the upholstery was 6 months out.

Keith, you make a good point. You put a deposit on an interior, wait the 2 years and then find out a co is going belly up. Not to say that will happen, but then you still dont have your interior and out the deposit. Has happened to others on this board with the LB outfit.

Maybe best to find a local upholsterer and go from there.

On one hand, I think 2024 is kind of unreasonable. But it is also just a year from now if you think about it!! On the flip side, this is what happens when there are very few companies doing this kind of work.

A backlog like that may indicate some other problems such as material availability. I would contact them and confirm if interested. If you order from Classtique, then I would contact them as well. It pays to do direct business if at all possible in the modern era. It's no guarantee that they won't go belly up but at least you have a heads up directly before getting in line for a high dollar purchase like that. The only other recourse is to go to a local trimmer with a good reputation or purchase a good walking foot sewing machine and do it yourself. Many of the cars I work on have no kits available anyway to I purchased the machine. I figure if I screw it up then I only have myself to blame. The really good thing about DIY is that you can choose your own materials or do your own substitutions if stuff is hard to get.

I contacted the good folks at Smith & Jones about a set of side curtains for my 31 Deluxe Roadster. I was informed that Dixie is having trouble sourcing the hard items (snaps, etc.) as their supplier went out of business. I don't know if it was Mac's, or who their old supplier was.
I'll try again in a few months and see what happens.
