brake rods rattle
How do you keep your brake rods from making a rattle at idle? I am considering attaching a spring on each and connecting it to the frame. This should keep tension on each one. Hopefully it will prevent the vibration and keep the noise down.

there are anti-rattle springs on the A, at least on mine. Mine were 'a bit weak' and were rattling my little brain out of my head so i got new ones from the know suppliers and since then, that rattle is gone. But, keep in mind, one rattle killed gives birth to two new ones... |

Re: brake rods rattle
You need to replace your anti-rattle springs. If done right, you will have no noise.
Enjoy. |

I prefer the 28/29 return springs instead of the 30/31 wire style. Mr WHN is spot on in my opinion, rod rattles mean a poorly adjusted brake. |

Re: brake rods rattle
"Back in the day", special snake-like springs were sold that put downward tension against the brake rods and supposedly reduced rattling noise. They are pictured in Floyd Clymer's "Model A Album" on page 95. I always thought this was a pretty good idea and certainly couldn't hurt anything. I wonder how they were received "back then" and whether it would be worth the effort and cost to reproduce these things, assuming the copyright protection has long since lapsed.

Re: brake rods rattle
I have those on my 30 Town Sedan brake rods. I wondered if they were just aftermarket brake rod springs, or what?

Re: brake rods rattle
Try this: turn the adjustable clevis off center a bit to add tension to the pin.

WHN:
No I am not driving this car for now. I bought it at an auction this past December, bad choice of time for the seller but good for me. I had to load it up and bring it home in the snow. I have other projects to do but I have been removing parts like the carb, starter, distributor, etc as I can. I take them home to rebuild when I have some spare time. |

Re: brake rods rattle
I saw something like that in a New Zealand magazine a few years ago. They recommended turning and holding the clevis in a twisted position before locking up the lock nut. That put the brake rod in torsion and stopped the rattle.

Re: brake rods rattle
Great idea and simple to do! I expect the small amount of torsion needed on the brake rods wouldn't be an issue? Anti rattle springs could still be in place for the authentic look.
