When assembling those 7 tooth steering boxes, it is important that there be NO end play in the shaft, yet it turns with little drag. To get a really good engagement between the worm and sector, those with the equipment and know how make eccentric sector shaft bushes to get optimal engagement between the two.
The 7 tooth steering box seems to have a bad reputation but if assembled with care, they are actually quite good.

The thrust should be away from the worm both top and bottom.
