272 oil pressure switch and what else
So, I have a 272 in my F100. Left side of block I have the oil pressure switch, and next to the switch is another port. I believe it is threaded, but not absolutely sure. Should this port have a plug in it or some other sensor? I don't see anything running out of it. Thanks

Re: 272 oil pressure switch and what else
There are a number of oil gallery plugs in horizontal line with the sender. If it's not in line, then just check the hole with something that is thin enough to go into it. If it doesn't go into the inside, then no plug is needed.

Re: 272 oil pressure switch and what else
There are 4 threaded holes in the main oil galley passage on that side of the block. The plugs close the holes used to drill oil passages to the bearings. (photos 1 & 2)
Also on the side of the block are two threaded holes used for some engine mounts, depending on which type vehicle the block is going into. (photo 3, yellow arrows) The circled fitting in photo 3 is a coolant drain. Last edited by dmsfrr; 04-16-2019 at 04:48 PM. |

Only a few holes on the right side of the block. The large pair in the middle are for a motor mount. There's a coolant drain toward the front and an alternate oil dipstick hole at center just above the oil pan. Two other threaded holes several inches on either side of the alternate dipstick hole, I have no idea. Last edited by dmsfrr; 04-15-2019 at 07:26 PM. |

On the car engines, the oil pressure sending unit is just to the right of the crankcase ventilation hole (looking at dmsfrr's photo, he has his blocked off with a plate). You will also notice immediately above the oil press hole, there should be a coolant drain cock. Not sure if they had it in the same place on trucks though.

The oil pressure switch may not be where Ford put it in '55 (T-Birds) but it was the most convenient location for me, given the other parts of the car to work around. The next fitting forward of the oil filter is/was a bit too close to the flange of the steady-rest, IIRC. Last edited by dmsfrr; 04-16-2019 at 02:41 PM. Reason: add photo |

Re: 272 oil pressure switch and what else
As I'm cleaning up my 312 57' block in my 56' Country Sedan painting as I go, I saw a port not shown in any pictures I could find nor this post. Take a look at the circled feature. I'm assuming it is in a water jacket location and just a plug of some sort? Any ideas to help me understand the origins of this motor and that plug be appreciated.

It looks like that plug is the water drain hole. Being almost in line with the core plug makes sense. Usually a petcock is used there instead of a plug, but factory may have been a plug

That is too high to effectively drain the coolant. The OEM drain provision was further down and forward on the skirt -

Re: 272 oil pressure switch and what else
My thoughts as well. I feel it is a sensor of some sort, but I do not see any reference photos or manuals that show that feature. Appears that a wire attached to it with a nut. This is a 57 replacement motor that may have come from a truck I'm gathering.

Could be an after-market water temp sensor.

What is under that nut? If it is a soft material I suspect it is a plug to repair a defect or damage. The nut pulls against a flat bottom surface to make the soft (rubber?) material expand.

Yes, rubber that has been compressed. I have not read or seen a mod like what you are leading to. Block number tells me a 57' and crank is 312. Just speculating as you that it was some mod drilled into that location. Just par for the course for my wagon. I have found so many different year parts on this motor.

Re: 272 oil pressure switch and what else
If this was drilled and tapped for a WATER TEMP SENSOR -
... they surely picked the wrong location. That reading location will only give temp readings of the front cylinder barrels on Nos. 5 & 6, the cooled coolant coming from the pump.
