T170 trans with stock 1932 ford K member ??
Does anyone happen to know if a T170 can be used without having to cut up the stock K member . It looks like one of the smaller trans’ that offer an overdrive gear .
Or is ANY overdrive trans just not doable without cutting the stock K member ? |

I don't think it will work. It is too long. I looked into it years back. John

Re: T170 trans with stock 1932 ford K member ??
I researched this, and the only way I could find to fit an overdrive trans into a 32 K member is to use a Volvo 4 spd + od box. I mocked it up. The overdrive would have to be assembled onto the box through the K member, from the rear. i mocked it up with the slightly larger M410 box, the motor would have to come forward about 5/8".
Having that and making it closed driveline would be another level of complexity. Mart. |

won't fit, the top center has to be cut and moved back several inches. I've got a good pic of one, I'll post later if interested.

I have an S10 trans behind an 8BA in a 32 Tudor I bought 2 years ago. All the modifications were done by the Previous owner.
Cutting the center X member is unavoidable. My advice is to remove the original Ford X member and install a Vern Tardel repro. You can modify that very easily and still keep the original brake and clutch set up. If you ever decide to go back original you can do so easily . You will still need an open drive rear. I believe there are some open drive conversion kits readily available also a later (1948 & up ???) F1 pick up rears were open drive too. You can use the center section with the earlier bells to keep the buggy spring

I think removing the original K member sounds like the thing to do. It will allow me to run a much stronger overdrive manual trans . I’m leaning towards a tremec tko 5 speed. They are super durable and would give me overdrive. A friend is running one behind his 32 with the same motor I’m currently building and he said it was the best thing he did for drivability on long trips. He logs tons of miles on his car . |

Re: T170 trans with stock 1932 ford K member ??
I had considered a Mitchell/Columbia but with most I’ve spoken to those are best suited for stock motors or modified motors without a lot of hp/tq.
With either of those options plus a 39 trans I just feel like I’m asking too much of the part because it was NEVER meant to be used with a significantly larger Hp/tq level. Back in the day if you blew your 39 trans it was much easier and cheaper to fix . My goal for this car is to drive it a ton ,lots of daily driving and also drive it to various driving events Bonneville, hot rod hill climb etc. The overdrive to me is something that will make my car more capable to do what I want to do driving wise . Car will have to do tons of freeway /highway driving .If it was a car that was mainly for just driving around town I wouldn’t bother with overdrive . I understand that a newer overdrive trans isn’t correct in this car but I gotta decide what is more important durability / drivability or being able to say my car has a correct era trans even though it won’t be as strong and won’t let me do freeway / long drives as well. |

I did a little searching
Here you go http://www.macsspeed.com/index.php/p...dapters-detail It is making me wonder if I could squeeze this through the stock 32 K member It looks pretty close in size to a 39 trans |

I emailed Dave. He only sells the kit and wouldn’t just do or sell a shaft.

I like that setup - have you already managed to build the transmission and get the associated machine work done? If so, would love to know who you had rework the main shaft?
Also, I'm sure you're aware, you'll need to shorten the 34 driveshaft and torque tube. Not a huge deal, but all part of the "fun"! LOL |
