The rear in the first picture looks like one from a chevy truck from the late 40's into the 60's.

Default Re: rear axle timken

I am looking for the pinion and ring gears for Timken axle 5:14 ratio. I need 2 sets for a drive system from a 100 foot barge. The drive leg (propeller) is driven by 2 halves of a Ford F25 or F35 Timken Diff. in order to pivot the leg into the water. Believe me this thing is a tank and has worked for over 50 years hauling fuel across Great Bear Lake in NWT. I am rebuilding it for the owner as well as getting a history lesson. LOL I need 2 ring gears and 2 pinion gears as well as any information I can find on these differentials. Much appreciated

Does it look like this? Not sure what an F25 or F35 is but the 5.14 was used in
1.5 ton trucks.

I know from looking around that there were 2 types. One series had a long output shaft end and the other was much shorter. Is yours a short version.

Like I said I am getting a history lesson. I believe it was a F2 , F3 series that used the Timken Diff's

I think with 5.14 gears it would be from an F5 or F6. Ford used that same basic axle
from 1930 into the early 50's. The book posted has some good information in it.

Thanks Bob, I really need to find the ring and pinions or at least a set of replacements that will fit in the housing. If I could find 2 diffs that I could buy the guts I would be a happy camper.

I did a little looking in the parts book and the 5.14 pinion is 01T-4609-C fits 1940-52
and the ring is 81T-4207 1938-1952.
I think your best bet would be Chucks Trucks, there was another post that said he
has 5.14 gears. http://www.chuckstrucksllc.com/

The 5.14 is the high speed gear set and all the guys with 1 1/2 ton trucks
are looking for them.

The later parts catalog from 1955 show 2 different R&P sets for TL & T series trucks (F4/F5/& F6). The earlier ones were keyed type pinion but they didn't have a 5.14:1 in the list anyway for T or TL or even anything close in the F-2 or F-3. The later 5.14:1 R&P set from 1948 thru 55 had splined pinion and was P/N 8T-4209-C for JH, T, TL, & W series trucks.

I don't know these axles all that well but I do know the big truck guys look for the 5.14:1 ratio since it will give them better highway speeds. I couldn't find anything for the lighter 3/4 ton F2 or 1 ton F3 trucks other than 4.11:1 and 4.857:1. This doesn't mean they didn't exist, it just is not in the 1955 catalog. The old prewar stuff was probably a keyed type pinion and the part number for those was already mentioned and may have continued up thru 1947.
