Default Timing pointer & rings for '36 engine?

What would be a good material to make timing pointer for '36 block, would like to use timing cover bolt. Want to run 3 piston rings instead of 4 on 4 ring pistons, are there 3 ring sets available or just leave fourth ring off?

little blurb in new Streetrodder....Vern Tardel is coming out with one similar to what hotcoupe did....Tardel's is straight with slots for the two bolts on the timing cover.."comes with two bolts and four washers... can be permanent or temporary....cards is provided for marking pulley for 20 degrees of timing in either direction.".....like the looks of hotcoupe's....very nice work...Mike

As to the fourth ring, I just left them out. The engine will be back from the machine shop next week, so I'll know soon. I ran this (leaving out the fourth ring) through the forum, and just about everyone agreed it was probably the thing to do, given today's rings and precision machining. When I asked the machinist that is doing the work, he readily agreed. It seems he does it on tractor engines. My pistons came with the rings, so I never had a chance to see if there were 3 ring sets available.

Ordered the pointer from Tardel and got a line on 3 ring set of piston rings from a "Barner."

Don't have enough computer savvy to do that. Go to his "parts for flatheads" and it's there. Not as nice as HOTCOUPE.

Drill a hole in the center of the timing cover bolt (they are not hardened) and put in a short piece of 1/8 " brass brazing rod. Makes a perfect pointer, in the right location, not subject to bolt orientation, no cost, easy , looks good.
Just an opinion

I agree on leaving out the fourth ring. It only adds friction. I've heard it said that the fourth ring somehow "stabilizes" the piston, but since rings float freely in their grooves, that is an impossibility. In reality, it's the exact opposite. The piston stabilizes the rings in the bore so they can do their job!

I like Floyd's suggestion best. Have seen this before and could not be any more simpler to do in my opinion,.... BUT.....for those who just like to buy and bolt stuff on, go with the Tardell piece, or try talking "hotcoupe" into going into business and making one for you
