little '41 fordor junk yard find today
I was checking out an old Junkyard today in my town. the owner said he had some old ford stuff. walked out back to take a look and found some 48-53 big truck parts. kept looking around for something more interesting and found a '41 four door sedan. wasnt much left of the body. opened the hood and found a Merc 8CM in the engine compartment. looks like its all there including Merc carb. car has the 3spd sideloader trans and the rearend still in it. frame looks decent. I got the whole car for $300. only thing i have interest in is the engine, trans, rearend and maybe frame. rest of the car is toast. maybe a few salvageable pieces.

Nice score, weather must be mild to be scrounging junkyards in Maine, in February! What's going on with the carb, 'never seen anything like it?

I believe that it's a Holley 885. I had one on my 50 Lincoln. It definitely is a weird carburetor. But, it has the same bolt pattern as a Rochester 2G with the small base.

Guy went by my place on a motorcycle last evening ! Don't think I ever remember that happening on the last day of January in my lifetime . Hmmmm, strange winter indeed. Supposed to be playing pond hockey here this coming weekend, doubt it will happen.

Yea, that's a 49-50 Merc Holley carb 4 bolt flange, the early Chevy 2 bbl Rodchester carb fit's that manifold, just hog out the carb holds in the manifold about 1/8in. Walt

Re: little '41 fordor junk yard find today
41 ford cars as a whole have been hard to sell but they have a ton of good parts and pieces for building hotrods.
if the front spindles are good you can get about half your investment back out of them alone. the 41 rear radius rods if not rotted or bent are desirable to someone building a A-V8 |

It's cool that you can still find this stuff out there. I loved haunting junk yards when I was in high school in the 60s. There was some incredible stuff out there. Much more big business now than back then.

That same carb, ( Holley 885 ) is also used on the "51 Merc.'s at least it is on mine all stock original early '51 sport sedan.

Re: little '41 fordor junk yard find today
Here's a bit of info on the 8CM inlet manifold, as Walt said you hog the intake out about 1/8" to fit the Rochester carb. The 885 has the same size barrels as the Rochester. So the intake manifold needs opening out the same amount to fit the carb that was bolted on at the factory!
That 885 is/was a damn good carb in good condition. Don't let folk put you off it saying it's a "flaming inferno it's, dangerous" its a common mistake. The flaming inferno is the carb that replaced the 885. Martin. |

Good find - you'll most likely get a lot more out of it, than you have into it. If the engine is good - you really did well!

Re: little '41 fordor junk yard find today
retrieved the car from the junkyard today and took the engine out. took the intake and heads off. its about what i expected. couple cylinders are fairly rusty from spark plugs being out. havent found any rust holes through the cylinders yet. top of valves are rusty. looks decent under the intake. the large mouse nest soaked up all the moisture.. will get the pan off and see how the base looks.

Re: little '41 fordor junk yard find today
Hell - I've managed to over-stuff fuel into a lot of Stromberg 97's . . . they had every opportunity to become an inferno - thank God they didn't!
