1939 Deluxe Coupe
Hi Guys
Before I so more work than necessaryu, I would like to ask: Has anyone removed the horn rod from the steering wheel in a 39 coupe without disassembling the steering box and removing the steering column from inside the car? I measured from the horn button to the back window and I hit at exactly 4 ft. Is there enough space inside the 39 coupe to remove it without damaging/bending the rod? Thanks in Advance Andy |

Re: 1939 Deluxe Coupe
No. On your coupe, you have to drop the steering
box or remove the left rear window. Otherwise , you'll bend the horn switch rod. Ken |

Re: 1939 Deluxe Coupe
Sorry one more question. After I remove bailing wire, will the horn pull out? Are there any other parts I need to remove at steering box?

Re: 1939 Deluxe Coupe
The question does not compute, the horn is no where near the steering box. Are you referring to the horn wire that goes up the column? When you remove the wire retainer and the lower cover you can then remove the lighting control components. The lower end of the wire that goes up the column is behind the lighting control (it is a disk like piece with the lighting wires connected to it). I attached some photos of different years including a couple of Model A lighting control components, they are similar in general arrangement. The center connector with the spring is the horn connection.

I was referring to the bailing wire on steering box. Once I pop that up I wanted to know if there are any other parts down there that I need to watch out for - don't want parts falling out - I gather from your response, its bailing wire up and then lower cover, then horn should pull out from inside car....right? Thanks |

Re: 1939 Deluxe Coupe
Need to take the horn button apart on the top end to get into the horn wire connection.

The advice you were given to allow the steering box to move was spot on. Disconnect the column from the dash first, then remove the bolts holding the box to the frame.

Re: 1939 Deluxe Coupe
To remove the wheel you will have to remove the rod first which will require disconnection the steering arm and unbolting the steering box from the frame. There are other ways to go about it, but none of them easy! You can remove a window. It might be possible to disconnect the steering drop and then loosen/remove the steering box to frame bolts and maneuver the column around to a position with enough clearance to pull the center rod. You need plenty of clearance to do it as the rod bends easily and then has to be replaced.

Re: 1939 Deluxe Coupe
If I may I have few questions on same subject:
1)is this a two-man job? Seems to me, you disconnect the column bolts and then the steering box bolts you need somebody to hold everything together 2) how many steering box bolts are there? I can only see two from looking under the car 3) is it best to work with steering box with the car up on the lift? this would also help if you need a second person holding everything together.

Re: 1939 Deluxe Coupe
Andy, Unless I'm missing something (and that's known to happen), you didn't say why you need to remove the horn/headlight switch rod. Is there a problem that is related to it? The reason I ask is; you may not have to remove the rod to correct the problem.

Re: 1939 Deluxe Coupe
A lot of information is available online. VanPelt is a good source. Here is a steering gear and column diagram from his site.

J thanks, as always you provide top-shelf information.

Re: 1939 Deluxe Coupe
Ok, I did miss that... I rebuilt the steering box on my '39 CS and had to remove the Banjo, etc. That job is one more reason why I like Convertibles... LOL Good luck with the project.
