I saw this 31 tudor for sale in Hemmings, but could not figure out what the light fixture on the back was?

It looks like something off of the back of a 1954 Mercury. (guessing here) With a light underneath and originally doubled as a handle to lift the trunk lid. Maybe affords a place to mount a license plate too with a couple of screws?

Best guess so far. - Maybe a "farm solution" to mounting a license plate that can be seen over a trailer?

It is anybody's guess as to where and what this came from. We now know that it is a 'light' and a 'white' light.
White lights are usually used on the rear of autos to illuminate license plate and/or to provide light for backing vehicle. Also, if it is wired to a dedicated on/off switch, could be used to see while taking spare off and/or changing tire ?

BTW...great idea for night work and Ford would have done good to have thought of that idea himself, IMO !

The car will soon be listed on e-bay with the "SUPER RARE PROTOTYPE CHMSL"

Gotta be worth an extra 5k...
