I currently have the gas tank on my 30 Tudor empty to replace the gas gauge float and install a filter on the shut off valve. Since it won't be driven anymore this year, would it be better to leave the tank empty until next spring or replace the gauge and install the filter and top off the tank?

A full tank REDUCES the chance of moisture accumulation but it should be treated with a gas stabilizer with an ethanol treatment property.

I have a large car collection and I have just added a can of SeaFoam to each one, then filled the car up with gasoline and drove it to the storage building for the winter. That way the SeaFoam has circulated through the system and mixed with the gas in the tank. Over the last week each car got an oil change. Wayne.

Fyi, i also installed a new filter and shut off valve and my car ran then shut off, took the fiter off, but kept the valve on. The car was starving for gas, the reason is the filter hole is smaller inside diameter. No more problem.

I like to keep mine as full as possible, but only with the good gas without corn crap. I also add 4 ounces of MMO.

Sounds like (reminds me of) a thread on what kind of oil is best.

I would leave it empty.
And before you fill it up, do a thorough cleaning of the tank. There are several threads on how to do this. I scrub as much as I can with a toilet bowl brush, then vacuum and blow out with high-pressure hose. Remember there are (or should be) two baffles that separate the tank into three compartments. Only the middle section is accessible, but it does help reduce the amount of rust, bolts, and tennis balls that may be in there. The 'Shut Off' valve should be removed for this clean out. |

I agree with Tom and Bruce. Just my 2 cents, but if you ever looked inside an old motor cycle tank the had about a gallon or less of gas in it, and it has been settings for a few years, it is always somewhat rusted from the level of the gas to the top of the tank due to condensation forming. Keep it full with some sta-bil added. Your rust may vary.

I leave all my vehicles with a full tank of non-ethanol gas (including my snow blower) Never had a problem with rust or starting when next needed.
We also leave all the engines at the farm with full tanks, gas, diesel or propane. Only trouble we had was with a second hand quad which had a rusted out tank. Fixed with solder. |
