Original 1932 Ford Dual Carb Aluminum Intake Round Post Generator
Ok experts, please tell me more about this? It is an Aluminum 1932 Intake for the round post generator with a setup for a dual Carb. What was this produced for and any information on it would be very helpful. Also has the 18- part number on the bottom of it underside.

Can you read the last bit of the part number?? Variants of a Ford part would end with a letter to indicate a new version. My suspicion is that this will just be the normal '32 manifold number, which would probably mean that the number was duplicated in a mold-making process, but if it had its own variation code, that would mean...?? Factory skulduggery??
There were some odd '32 generator mount manifolds shown years ago in a boat equipment ad that was reprinted in the V8 Times. I remember a two-barrel '32 style manifold, possibly for the Lincoln big Stromberg...there were other oddities in there. |

It is very crudely made. Rather than create a new, unique mold, it would appear that they shaved off the raised center where the carburetor normally attaches and the lip of the hole where the oil filler tube originally was inserted, hence the two 'globs' of aluminum in the center and in front of the fuel pump mounting surface. This is confirmed by the photo of the underside of the manifold at the rear where the oil filler tube hole still appears.
Given the absence of an oil filler tube, the date of this creation is likely late '33 or early '34 when the integrated fuel pump stand and oil filler tube was adopted. One can't help but wonder why someone went to this much bother as the '32 and early '33 V-8 intake manifolds are of a very elementary design with a common chamber within the manifold for all of the ports as a result of the use of a one-barrel carburetor. This tended to starve the cylinders at the ends of that chamber (#1, 4, 5, and 8) and overfuel the center cylinders. A 2-carburetor manifold such as this one would reduce the drawbacks of a single chamber within the manifold, but it is still a poor substitute for what Ford adopted with the '34 models. |

18-6520 was the cast-in part number. In some cases, but not all, the date of the casting (month and day) was also cast in next to the part number (or appeared without a part number). There were three different variations of the '32 V-8 single barrel manifold, but no suffix was added to the part number to distinguish the variations.

It still has a part number because it was likely made from an altered production mold, unless, of course, if it has a unique part number. It's difficult to read the number in your photo, but it does appear to be 18-6520, the same as the production one-barrel manifold. If you clean the number perhaps it will be more legible.

Ford used letters for suffixes at that time plus a low number (1, 2, or 3) if there were multiple suppliers of the part. An example where both letters and numbers were used is V-8 ignition coils in the 1932 model year. 18-12024-A1 was the "tall" coil, 18-12024-A2 was the "banded ball" coil used on a limited basis during the middle of the '32 model year, and 18-12024-A3 was the familiar domed coil used on a limited basis late in the '32 model year and adopted for all V-8s until mid 1936.
A number-only prefix such as "-9" is inconsistent with Ford's part numbering system of the period. |
