Air maze air cleaner

I know Henry didn't put anything on the carb to clean and filter the air intake and I know its said that the carb doesn't balance out right with a filter on it. I've had a radiator hose on the carb and connected to an oil bath air filter off of a hay baler engine for 45 years and the car runs perfect this way, but also I have another "A" with an Air Maze air filter I bought and mounted on it but it doesn't fit very good on carb and lets in air from outside the filter. Does anyone have a solution for a better fit.

There was an earlier thread about a filter that uses a K&N element. I bought one and removed my Air Maze. The car runs much, much better. Many will tell you that an air filter is not needed, as you have said.

If it is an original Air maze it will have a sheet metal ring in the area of the throat that mounts to the carburetor. I went to the hardware store and purchased an o-ring that fits in the throat area. Thus the o-ring seats against the sheet metal ring and the throat of the carburetor and provides a seal between the carburetor and air maze.

Just tie yourself to someone's "AA" torque tube & ride for 47 miles, then ask yourself, "Does a Model A need an air filter"? Bill W.

Vermin has a really old Air-Maze & I'll leave it on at fire up time for safety, they are a very efficient flame arrestor in case of a cough back. K&N filters are very good, I wonder if one that will fit in place of my wire element would be a sufficient size? I also inherited a new aftermarket, SMALL paper element air filter assembly that would probably work well on a BRIGGS & STRATTON motor-LOL
On paper element filters, I read somewhere that you need 100 Sq. In. of filtering area for a 200 Cu.In. engine. I don't know if those numbers would apply to a K&N.
Some suppliers have a high mounted filter for "A"s that appeared to have a quite LARGE K&N element & it's mounted above the rear of the cylinder head. Bill W.
(Someone mentioned OIL BATH AIR CLEANERS, I've seen a number of them on cars in Argentina. They mount them on the right side of the front of the engine & plumb them to the carb. with exhaust tubing.)

I have an original airmaze off my grandpa's A that he quit driving in the 50's. It makes absolutely no difference in engine performance with it in place or not. Gives me peace of mind that at least some of the dust from our gravel roads is filtered out.

When I got Vermin, the whole bottom cup of the airmaze was full of ATF! I guess somebody thought they had INVENTED the OIL-BATH air cleaner!
I know a guy that formed screen wire into a shape like a Bakers Hat & clamped it to his carb neck & it actually has bugs stuck on it at times, I guess the rocks fell off. Bill W.

Maybe a "Chore Boy" would do the job.

If you coat the screen with a small amount of oil, (not dripping just a very light coat) it will stop more dust, just need to clean it more often. I have one on mine, must have got lucky as mine fits perfect, and yes the screen gets dirty and I do clean it. I have tested a few different carbs and never found any difference with the filter in place...... It's your car each can think and do as they want.

I agree with Jon. Lots of small engines also used to have wire mesh air filters and you were to rinse them in gas, blow dry them, then dip them in oil and let the excess oil drip off. This is the same principle as the oil bath.

I don't use any type air filter on mine. I can feel the difference. air filters cause more problems than they solve with an updraft carburetor, balanced or not.

I have ran the tudor with the air maze and a screen type filter on and off, and notice no difference. Well, except that with the air maze on, the car runs a lot quieter.

The trick with the metal screen filters is to spread the turns apart a bit to let air through. If you leave them all squished together like they come out of the box, there will be greater restriction.

Don't even think about running the paper filter element. Way too many bad stories about those.

That must have been the problem with the one that I had. I installed it like it came out of the box. Mine was noisier with the air maze installed. My spark plugs stayed black with soot

1000% agree, not needed for any reason at all on a model a...serves no purpose.

I am a good 3 miles from asphalt, on gravel roads which will kick up so much limerock dust that you can't see behind you! I wouldn't want all that stuff being sucked into the carb, so I run a maze filter.
