Re the rear axle and bearings. If you wash and clean the bearings, clean the axle surfaces and grease everything up well and reassemble, you will probably not have a problem. These old Fords are very durable. They will tolerate things being less than perfect. What is your intended usage? An occasional spin out for ice cream? Or a transcontinental road trip. If the former, the bearings will be ok. If the latter then some rebuilding would be in order. Now, of course, I haven't seen pictures of the bearings and axle surfaces so can't say if they really are worn so bad that you shouldn't try and use them but use your judgement. There are no specs. They are not adjustable. You can't adjust them to a spec. There will also be in and out free play. This also is not adjustable in the bearings. There is no spec. The differential clearances dictate the end play. I had a 40 coupe with a lot of end play on one side. It did not effect the way it drove one bit.
I'd wager that cleaned and reassembled with new grease and your rear end will be just fine. These are robust old cars and were over engineered. They are not finicky modern units prone to fail at every turn. Get it running and driving and listen for problems. Post pics of the parts if you want an opinion from experienced people. Mart. |

Hello. Here is some pics of what I have found with my hubs. I am not as concerned with the axle housing as far as the finish goes, it is that they are out of round that I am concerned about. There is also a wear grove where the grease seal rides. Since the hubs are not being reproduced, repairing these, or finding replacements is where I am at. Just looking for opinions or advice from anyone who may have had to deal with this in the past is all.
Thanks. |

I must admit they don't look very good from this side of my monitor.
