In all of my years in this hobby (53), I cannot recall any reports of stick, stone and bird strikes ruining a radiator in a Model "T" or Model "A" Ford.
Back when the Model "A" was new, it was common to run on unpaved roads where the radiator was vulnerable to being hit by debris, so a radiator stone shield had a functional value. Today, the only values of a stone guard are cosmetic, (1) because it hides a crappy looking repro radiator, and (2) because the look is pleasing.

When I had my radiator rebuilt, the shop advised me that I should allow a 1 1/2 inch space between the shell and the radiator face. I used longer rubber adapters to get a little extra space and haven't noticed any extra heat effect from the use of the shell. Peyton
