In France vehicle inspection centres are completely independent from garages. There is no incentive to fail a car hoping to get some work. The system is excellent. Vehicles de Collection go through a watered down inspection that checks basic safety and roadworthyness and the test is due once every five years. Older cars are respected and encouraged but safety standards are maintained.

I believe that a complete safety should be required yearly on all antique or classic cars. When you read on this site about farmer fixes, 50 year old weather cracked tires and many other idiotic repairs to cars you know many of them are unsafe. Get them safe or get them the hell off the road. Wayne

Sure glad I live in Tennessee. I walked into the county court clerks office and paid the tax on what I said I paid for my 31CCPU plus $25. for a good for life antique tag and I am done.
No inspection, accepted a Texas title and out the door. Took maybe ten minutes. Local cops honk and give me a thumbs up as I drive around town to the local Lowes, ice cream shop or Autozone. Life is great. |

When I got my sticker he looked at the steering wheel and asked me to drive it into the bay, then couldn't understand why I had to start it again to make wipers work, he took my word for it. They just do a safety check. Still costs 40 Bucks!

In New York they only charge $10 for my Model A, knowing the way this State operates, I would figure them to charge more then any other State.

As others have pointed out - if you are not doing the service yourself on a vehicle - you should be taking it to a mechanic who does. That mechanic is who should be doing your safety inspection. Jim |
