Early Model A's had a convex lens as a magnifier. Later on the glass was thin and flat. Some repro kits have a thicker glass which is a problem.

As mentioned, the early A's had a magnifying lens. You'll have to check the standards to see when they changed to flat glass. I always use the original glass and face plate, but use the new cork gaskets and neoprene float. My gauge still has the cork float I installed about 15 years ago, and it's still doing fine.
