The more of a hurry you're in, the more complicated your buckle becomes

The outhouse I built when I move into the Santa Cruz Mountains was built on skids. When the hole was full, I just dug a new hole and dragged the outhouse over the new hole with my tractor.

When I moved to Edna, outside San Luis Obispo, we needed an outhouse. I picked a spot in the back of the house and started digging. I found lots of old whiskey bottles. Turns out that was the spot of the old outhouse. The men would drink in the outhouse and hide the bottles under the seat. When empty they ended up in the bottom of the hole. The old outhouse had not been there for maybe 50 years, so no problem digging in the enriched soil. The house was ancient. We rented it for $17 per month. No electricity or running water and single wall construction. Insulation consisted of wall paper on the inside. I bought the AA truck from the farmer who rented the house to us for a cord of wood. It was complete with bullet holes from the inside out. The farmer, Lukie, carried a loaded and cocked riffle in back of the seat when off roading. I remember Lukie sitting on a chair in his garden with a whisky bottle under the chair and a riffle on his lap and a water hose. He would cuss at the birds that came to eat his crop and shoot at them. But he always missed because of the whisky. The whisky eventually killed him and his wife sold the farm and move into town. Today Edna is a suburb of San Luis Obispo with lots of expensive houses. Gone are the cow pastures. The place is unrecognizable. Such is progress.

Dropping that thing off the back would definitely be the s**ts.

Great story, Neil. SLO is definitely not the sleepy cow town it was back then - highly gentrified, to say the least. Not necessarily progress.

Hopefully he's delivering it to my great grandparents. Looks like they could use a new one.

Looks like if you needed to open the door you’d have to release the chain holding the outhouse to the truck. Better plan ahead and bring an assistant.

$#!T seems to follow me around too. I just try to stay ahead of the smell.

On old sailing ships, it was known as the poop deck.
