Here’s how I modified my 39 with the body off of course. I wanted to be able to easily pull the trans if I had to from the top side.

Thanks guys trying to decide if it’s worth pulling the body off to do this or just fight it with the body on. Only good thing I have going for me is I have a 2 post lift. In all actuality if I came up with a 6 spline torque tube in good shape I could cruise it for the summer then do this in the winter. Just got this in January and been headache after headache but after driving it with 3.54 and 215/75/15’s she still revs pretty high at 50mph. Itching to put some miles on it not ready to tear it all down

I had to weld up the rear mount area on the tailhousing and re drill and tap it, so I could narrow it enough to where it would slide backwards into the open area to clear the clutch. Of course that means extending the trans cover rearward so the trans can come out.

Everyone has a different driving style and preferences.
If possible try to find someone with a conversion like you plan and drive their car. You may not like the gear splits. |

I did the swap to my 39 30 years ago. Used a Bronco 9" with 3.70 gears. Does 73 mph at 2500 rpm. i did mine with the body off.
