Hi Guys, yes, "Hangtown" was actually a nickname for Placerville many years ago. Placerville has a rich history, literally, as it was a very integral part of the gold rush that started in Coloma in 1849. Placerville was also called "Dry Diggins" for a period of time.

John Studebaker made wheelbarrows in this town to supply the miners, and eventually took his money and invested with his brothers in Indiana. They opened a blacksmith shop and made wagons. They eventually started the Studebaker automobile company.
