28 Phaeton seat springs
I bought new seat springs from Snyders, is there any wood on the seat springs bottoms where they contact the risers? I never had any originals to compare with. I would think that once they are upholstered, contact with the seat risers would wear the vinyl out prematurely along the bottom edge.

Re: 28 Phaeton seat springs
No wood. The upholstery material does not rest directly on the the metal seat platform either. The bottom rim of the cushion and material is encapsulated in thin sheet metal, protecting the upholstery material. The seat cushion rests metal on metal on the seat platform. Might be able to post photo later.

Re: 28 Phaeton seat springs
The seats in my (January) '29 phaeton were upholstered back in the mid-to-late 1960's, but there was no provision for any thin metal encapsulation on the seat spring sets that were available at that time. The same was the case when I upholstered my '28 roadster in the mid-1980's, using seat springs that were available at that time. Consequently, the upholstery material comes in direct contact with the seat frames on both cars. It does seem to me that it would be preferable to have a metal-to-metal contact instead of material on/against metal, but neither set of seat springs in these cars does, and despite that, the upholstery material has held up quite well on both cars. Hope this helps. Good luck on your project.

Re: 28 Phaeton seat springs
There should be a piece of wood running side to side under the middle of both the front and rear seat springs for support. If you're not familiar with it I probably have some pictures I can post.

Re: 28 Phaeton seat springs
My non-original 28 Phaeton has newish seats and I have two problems with them that might be of interest to you, before you spend any money on your car seats.
1) The front seat doesnt "sit" properly - when slid into place the bottom of the springs catch on the supporting cross-strut and the seat won't go under the back rest properly. I'm thinking of lining the seat pad with a thin sheet of hardboard to try to stop this - I reckon a sheet of metal might be squeaky? 2) The (fixed) back rest is very thick and my 6' son would be more comfortable driving with more leg room. So I'm thinking that it might be better to get the seats reupholstered to make the back rest thinner, and the seat cushion fit better. I'd also be grateful for any comments about this. Thanks so much Cags |

Re: 28 Phaeton seat springs
Dudley,
The metal around the bottom edge of open car and pickup seat springs are part of the springs, not separate pieces. I have a couple of seat cushion springs made by Snyder's. I can take some pictures of them, showing the bottom metal trim. There is piping sown into the seat upholstery covering that is crimped into the metal on the bottom. My concern is how to get a nice looking crimp. I have seen some pretty poor looking crimp jobs on open car and pickup seat cushions. I don't know how Ford did it, but their crimping looks pretty good from the few original seat cushions I have seen. I think the repro springs are made just like the original seat cushion springs from what I can tell. Rusty Nelson |

Re: 28 Phaeton seat springs
Hi FordyForever . It looks like your phaeton is RHD so most likely in from Argentina or Uruguay . My experience with these cars is that sometimes way too much padding is used and also a lot have lost their original seat springs. My 28 ex Uruguay phaeton has seat springs on a wood base but they do fit well and the edges drop beneath the seat base retaining lip .

I also bought my springs from Snyders, going to take a closer look at them now.

Re: 28 Phaeton seat springs
I sent some pictures of the botom of open car seat springs made by Snyder's to Dudley. Am posting them here so other people can see what they look like.
