Generator install question

I have just rebuilt a spare generator for my stock. I got carried away, I think, in painting the brackets that attached it to the engine. Should these brackets be not painted where they attach to the engine? In my simple guess, I would think they should not be painted so that they can ground the generator to the engine and battery. I think I may need to get the old sander out an take off some paint. Comments please on this simple question.
