I tend to lean towards the bearing myself based on the transmission side of things. As with Mac I agree the pilot end of the input shaft is a key part of good transmission operation as this end becomes the third bearing to align the input shaft which aligns the output shaft on which is mounted the heart of the transmission which is the synchro hub, sleeve and brass rings. i've disassembled many trans with a worn surface on the input shaft pilot which I believe is caused by a bushing. If a vehicle is stored in a dry environment a high quality bearing should work.
