Default 8volt battery

I recently saw a 6 volt Ford with an 8 volt battery and wondered if the 3 brush generator could be adjusted to charge the battery. Also, I would think this would cause problems for the original Ford coil, resistor, and possibly the condenser. A few years ago I saw something similar but with an alternator and was told that the alternator had been adjusted??? to not overcharge the battery. Is this funky stuff just to improve starting power?
