Default Embarrassing question about a radiator fan

My '56 Country Sedan with a 292 and 3 on the tree apparently has never had a fan shroud. I've added a Vintage Air system so I thought it would be a good idea to build a shroud now. The car is running a 6 blade 18" diameter fan. After much tinkering, the shroud is done and it's all ready to go back in. OK, we're now at the embarrassing question: is the fan suppose to be producing flow towards the engine? I had thought that it was suppose to blow towards the radiator. The belt setup turns the fan clockwise (like the engine) when viewed from the front of the car. I had a moment's inspiration when I thought
that all I had to do was flip the fan over but, nope, that doesn't change anything. I'd love to finish this job off tomorrow but I may be shopping for a new fan instead. Any input, including snide remarks about shade tree mechanics are welcome.
