Personally, I found that the spin on has little advantage over a canister type. Both are messy and will spill oil when loosening, the spin on maybe a little less so. After two tries with an aftermarket spin on adapter, I went back to the canister. No problems after that. But currently, both of my YBlocks have the spin on added by the engine builders.
The canister type is more eco friendly.
