It only matters to sanctioning bodies like the NHRA.
They always say it should be on the positive side and should stop all electrical functions.
Their reasoning is, if the switch is on the negative side of the battery, the alternator is not being interrupted and could still generate power and cause issues, since it is still capable of generating power in the electrical system.
