Gasket between carb and intake

Am I the only one to use a cork gasket between the carb and intake manifold and having trouble. Twice I have used the cork gaskets that came in the gasket sets and found them to loosen up after a couple hundred miles and to find that the inter circle of the gasket has been eaten away almost to the outer edge of the gasket. Is the gas vapers eating the cork away or maybe dissolving the binder in the cork? I have got to make a new gasket from something else besides cork to work on my A's.
