Default Coils

Hello again follow Ford guys. I have another mystery. The 36 Model 68 I have had a 6 volt coil setup of the modern kind. I am in the process of changing it back to the original coil that sits on top of the distributor. I sent the original type coil to Skip down in Florida and he sent it back all fix up and I began the process of the rewiring to make it work. Put the resister that's under the dash on the firewall back into play, thanks to Mike at 3rd gen for that pointer, checked voltage at the coil with ignition on and 6 volts. Great, hit the button car fired right up. Then in about 2 or 3 minutes the car died and wouldn't start. Check for fire, no fire. Pulled the coil back off, check ohms on condenser, it's perfect, checked coil. nothing. Sent coil back to Skip after talking to him about what happened and he said send it back and he'll look at it. This morning he tells me that after looking at the coil the only thing that could cause the coil to burn up like it was is that I left the ignition on. I assured him that wasn't the case and retold what had happened but to no avail I had to send him some money to get it redone and functioning properly once again. That being said. Did I miss anything that would cause this to happen? Input much appreciated.
