1951 mercury steering box

i have a 1951 mercury that i want to remove the steering box . i know the manual says to remove it from inside the car. but my car has an under dash air cond & i don,t want to move it . now my question is has any one on the barn removed it from under the car.i can remove the steering wheel & the collum from inside the car. i think it will clear but it would be nice to know from some one who has did it. thank you
